It’s never easy to lose a furbaby. It’s also heartbreaking being in the position of having to explain death to a child still young, now wondering where their doggo friend is. How they react and the weight of what they’re feeling is something you want to take and be responsible of so they don’t have to.

Meredith was just a small, lil’ baby when her parents welcomed a dog into the family. Of course, a strong connection could be expected when Meredith got older, and it did. Meredith and her dog Abbey might as well have been attached to the hip. They were inseparable.

But we know dogs rarely outlive their humans, so as time passed Abbey got older. Then she passed away with Meredith by her side. While Meredith experienced the grief of losing her best friend, she also took solace in knowing Abbey was in a better place, free of pain, and running like she did in her youth. Abbey was now in the care of someone she loved as much: God.

Abbey wrote a letter to God that reads:

Dear God,
Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in Heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.
I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.
Love, Meredith

It was sent plastered with stamps because it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven, as shared in this YouTube video. You might be reading this thinking her parents are responsible for what follows.

Meredith’s mother went to check the mail and found a gold package that was addressed to her daughter. Despite concern over the package that had no sender address, she let her daughter open it. Inside was Mr. Rogers’ book When A Pet Dies as well as a letter written in response to Meredith’s:

Dear Meredith,
Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help and I recognized her right away.
Abbey isn’t sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don’t need our bodies in heaven, I don’t have any pockets to keep your picture in so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.
Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I’m easy to find. I am wherever there is love.
Love, God

This story is just a sliver of exceptional kindness we may or may not see often. How wonderful it is Meredith had some peace of mind over Abbey’s passing thanks to this mysterious gesture. Here’s to the memory of all the furbabies that were good doggos! They were the goodest of good.
